Chris Evans, Mike Pangrazio, Frank Ordaz, Harrison Ellenshaw, and Ralph McQuarrie, the unsung heroes of the STAR WARS universe. Together, they created some of the most realistic matte paintings ever put to film. From a city in the clouds to the deck of a fully armed and operational battle station, the artists created worlds, structures, and environments that were so lifelike that the naked eye couldn’t tell the difference. Matte paintings (or glass shot) originated in the early ‘teens’ of the silent era. It was used to create an illusion of a place that would be too expensive to travel to or maybe too elaborate and time consuming to physically build. Here’s a tribute to some of the best that have appeared in a galaxy far, far away.
